ST Electronics (Info-Security) launches world's first smartcard-protected HDD enclosure with AES Encryption @ 2008 Internation CES
Las Vegas, 7 January, 2008 – ST Electronics (Info-Security) Pte Ltd, [STEE-InfoSec], a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited, today unveiled the DigiSAFE DiskCrypt Mobile DCM200 – the world’s first USB 2.0 external drive enclosure with smartcard protection. This latest Full Disk Encryption (FDE) product combines hardware encryption and smartcard-based 2-Factor protection. STEE-InfoSec is demonstrating how DCM200 offers ultimate security with complete ease of use to its users at the International CES 2008 in Las Vegas, USA .
DCM200 employs strong AES encryption to perform full disk encryption. Encryption is done in the hardware and is independent of the workstations or the Operating System. This has two advantages. First, there is no loss in the performance of the CPU or the hard drive. Second, complete OS-independence means that no software needs to be installed - users need not worry about Trojans, viruses or software upgrades. STEE-Infosec has also developed a Smartcard Management System to enable enterprises to deploy and manage DCM200 units easily. DCM200 units will begin shipping from March 2008 and will retail at approximately US$99.
“A DCM200 user has to insert a smartcard and enter a PIN before access to the data on the hard drive is allowed. This is smartcard-based two factor authentication - it offers the same level of security as that provided by bank ATM cards. In addition, DCM200 carries an in-built keypad for entering of the PIN. Using the keypad instead of the PC’s keyboard for PIN entry safeguards it against Trojans and keyloggers.”
